TOKYO

After Osaka, we went to Tokyo for four days in December 2015, or rather Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea. The kids liked the two Disney parks so much the previous year that they bugged us to go there again last year! Before Tokyo, we went to Niseko, Osaka and Nara… Read about our trip in Niseko, Read about our trip in Osaka or Read about our trip in Nara.

Why We Like Tokyo Disneyland (More Than DisneySea)
  • With a castle in the centre of the park, Disneyland gives a fairy tale feeling. While DisneySea looks impressive as well, it does not have the same magic as Disneyland
  • Rides in Disneyland are well designed and well liked by both adults and kids. There are a fair number of rides suitable for the young ones. In comparison, DisneySea has fewer rides for the very young
  • Parades in Disneyland make one feel close to the action, as they pass by right in front of the audience. As for DisneySea, the parades are further out in the water
  • Two show restaurants in Disneyland (with four different shows), where we got to watch Disney performance while having our meals. Guests staying in one of the three Disney hotels can book the show restaurants online a month in advance. As for DisneySea, there is only one show restaurant. It cannot be booked in advance, so long queues can be expected
  • Chef Mickey restaurant (in Disney Ambassador Hotel) allows guests to get up close with Disney characters as they dine. Online reservation is available to guests staying in one of the three Disney hotels

What We Dislike About Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea
  • During the holiday period, long queues can be expected in rides, Fastpass ticket machines, popcorn stalls and restaurants
  • Staying in one of the three Disney hotels, buying Disney entrance tickets, eating at show restaurants and buying Disney merchandise can burn a hole in your wallet
  • If you want the best view of the parade, need to wait and reserve your seat before the start of the parade

Accommodation In Tokyo Disney Resort

Tokyo Disneyland Hotel

  • Located right in front of Disneyland, while DisneySea is just a short monorail ride away
  • Guests staying in one of the three Disney hotels can enter the two Disney parks 15 min before the general public (Happy 15 Entry). This makes a huge difference, as long queues start forming outside the parks’ entrance even before the gates are open
Food In Tokyo Disney Resort
  • Ikspiari Shopping Mall: a variety of Japanese and Western restaurants, right next to Disney Ambassador Hotel. Tsukiji Tamazushi restaurant (fourth floor) serves fresh sashimi and good sake
  • Tokyo Disneyland: The Diamond Horseshoe and Polynesian Terrace Restaurant (both show restaurants) serve decent food
  • Tokyo DisneySea: Cape Cod Cook-Off (show restaurant) serves decent fast food
  • Chef Mickey restaurant (Disney Ambassador Hotel): dinner buffet where guests can take photos with Disney characters. Food is better than the restaurants in Disney parks that we have tried

Fastpass Tickets
  • Separate, much shorter queue for Fastpass ticket holders
  • Each Fastpass ticket allows entry to a specific ride at a designated time period (lasting an hour)
  • As more Fastpass tickets are issued for a particular ride, the designated entry time gets pushed back until there are no more Fastpass tickets left
  • Once a Fastpass ticket is issued, the ticket holder cannot get another Fastpass ticket of any ride until the designated entry time of the Fastpass ticket or 2 hrs after the Fastpass ticket is issued, whichever comes first
  • Fastpass tickets for the most popular rides run out fast
  • Only the more popular rides issue Fastpass tickets. The Fastpass ticket machines are located near their respective rides
Practical Tips for Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea
  • Stay in one of the three Disney hotels, if possible. Key benefits include Happy 15 Entry and online reservation for show restaurants
  • Take the Fastpass tickets of the most popular rides first, as they run out the earliest. These include Toy Story Mania (DisneySea) and Monster Inc (Disneyland)
  • Use Disney mobile apps, such as TDR Wait Time Check, to check the Fastpass ticket timing and waiting time of the rides. To avoid overseas data usage for mobile app, apply for a mobile router in advance
  • For popular restaurants in Ikspiari Shopping Mall, either go there earlier or make reservations to avoid long queues during holiday period
