NARA

We spent half a day in Nara in December 2015, as a day trip from Osaka. Before Osaka, we went to Niseko, while Tokyo was the last leg of our Japan trip… Read about our trip in NisekoRead about our trip in Osaka or Read about our trip in Tokyo.

Nara was once Japan’s capital city, and is a short train ride away from Osaka. While Nara is full of historical treasures such as temples and pagodas, what attracts us even more are the free-roaming deer in Nara Park. Kids can buy deer biscuits over there to feed the deer, which is something our kids enjoyed a lot!

What We Dislike About Nara
  • We have to keep buying biscuits for the kids to feed the deer!

Getting There To Nara
  • 30 min train ride from Osaka-Namba Station to Kintetsu Nara Station (by Kintetsu Railways), and then a 5 min walk to Nara Park. It’s a longer walking distance to Nara Park from JR Nara Station (by Japan Railways)

Food In Nara

Practical Tips For Nara
  • Take the Kintetsu Railways to Kintetsu Nara Station. Nara Park is closer to Kinstetsu Nara Station than JR Nara Station, which can be reached by Japan Railways
  • Biscuits for feeding the deer can be bought at several stalls inside Nara Park
  • Some deer may snatch the biscuits. Try to keep the biscuits out of their sight (e.g. in pockets or back-facing the deer), and then take the biscuits out one by one to feed the deer
